Betting on Carbon Capture

Wyoming is pouring resources into technology that could let it keep burning coal in a carbon-conscious world.

Faced with a national retreat from coal, Wyoming has placed a significant bet on a technology that could offer its signature industry a lifeline: capturing carbon dioxide before it reaches the atmosphere.

The idea is to trap the carbon emissions from power plants and either store them deep underground or put them to use, allowing coal to keep burning without the climate consequences that have made it a target. The state has invested in research facilities and required utilities to study the technology, hoping to prove it can work at scale.

Supporters see carbon capture as a way to preserve coal jobs and keep power plants running while addressing emissions, a pragmatic path that lets Wyoming honor both its economy and a lower-carbon future. Skeptics counter that the technology remains expensive and unproven at the scale required, and that the money might be better spent preparing for a future without coal.

The stakes for Wyoming are high. If carbon capture proves viable and affordable, it could extend the life of the coal industry that has underwritten the state for generations. If it does not, the state will have spent heavily chasing a solution that never arrived. For now, Wyoming is pressing ahead, wagering that innovation might yet reconcile its coal heritage with the demands of a warming world.
